Work 18: Spacewalker, 2019

Digitally woven cotton with embroidery, beads, crystals, chain on wood stretcher | 33 x 29 in.

Concept: I made a series of embroidered “paintings” which I call Walkers that bring attention to the idea that most humans experience the sensation of moving through space, no matter our identities. Whether we walk with our bodies, move through digital space, or use other technology to assist, walking transports us to where we want to go, keeps us in shape, and shows our values, such as marching in political protests.

Process: To make this image, I started with photographs of bodies walking that I took or that I found on the web, silhouetted them, and digitally collaged them into other-worldly environments. I had the images woven via jacquard loom into tightly woven tapestries which I adorned with all manner of beads, crystals, chain, pigment and embroidery to suggest the infinite inner and outer worlds that we all inhabit.
