Work 7: Sitting Sculpture, 2016

Digitally woven cotton, polyester, thread | Dimensions variable

Process and Function: This is a portable sculpture to be used for seating for meditation sessions, discussions and performances. It is made from 6 tubular pillows, each with a different pattern. They can be configured in a circle or another arrangement depending on context, and can be carried short distances.

Concept: Much of my work aims to create spaces of uncertainty to spark discussion about other worlds. This piece aims to provide comfort to encourage an open state of mind where people can be aware of emotions and thoughts, and be open to others’ energy.

Activity

Meditative Exercise:

  1. Find a place to sit comfortably with your eyes closed, a place where you feel safe and secure.
  2. For 3 minutes, listen to the sounds around you. Start with the sound of your breath for about a minute, expand to the sounds in the room you are in for a minute, and then see if you can hear sounds coming from further away.
  3. Open your eyes and sit for an extra minute to notice if you feel different than when you started.
  4. Take a selfie and notice the energy you give off in your eyes, face, and body.
