Middle Level Education

Degree: B.S.Ed.

Share your passion for the subjects of English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies with young learners 4th to 8th through Millersville University's Middle Level Education program.

Why Study This Program?

Students who complete this program receive a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) degree in Middle Level Education with options in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies. Upon completion of the Middle Level Education program, students apply for a Pennsylvania Instructional I teaching certificate.

The Professional Development School (PDS) permits teacher candidates, upon completion of a successful application process, to work in the same classroom the semester before student teaching and during student teaching. Teacher candidates are trained in the “co-teaching” model of instruction and learn to collaborate with professionals in the school. Principals say these candidates interview for their first teaching position like they have “completed” their first year of teaching.

Several unique features of the Middle Level Education Program:

  • Extended study in content area choice
  • Field placements every semester
  • Opportunities to travel abroad
  • Unique courses in working with children with exceptionalities and English language learners

What Will You Learn?

The direction for your course work at Millersville University will be partially dictated by your chosen specialization in English and language arts, mathematics, science or social studies. However, in addition to that concentration area you will also take courses in each of the remaining content areas to broaden your understanding of Middle Level Education.

All MU education programs involve a Foundations Bloc which explores modern teaching and the psychology of teaching, Professional Blocs which focus on instructional technology and positive learning environments, and a semester of student teaching.
