About the Center

Dr. Jennifer Meehan's New Assignment

Dr. Jennifer (Jinni) Meehan has been the developer and primary instructor for our course Space Weather Decision Support, as part of the Graduate Certificate in Space Weather, Environment and Policy offered at Millersville. Dr. Meehan has started a one-year special position detailing to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as Assistant Director for Space Policy until February 2025.

Millersville University is a StormReady University

Since March 2020, Millersville has been a StormReady University. This designation requires a certification process through the National Weather Service. StormReady helps communities around the nation develop communication and safety skills to keep them safe before, during, and after a weather event.

The Center for Disaster Research and Education (CDRE) is happy to announce that this certification has been renewed through 2028! To be StormReady, communities must establish a 24-hour warning point, an emergency operations center, have multiple ways of receiving severe weather warnings and forecasts to alert the public, create a system to monitor local weather conditions, promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars, and develop a hazardous weather plan. Currently, there are over 3,000 StormReady communities across the country, with Millersville being one of seven StormReady Universities in Pennsylvania and one of 320 universities in the country.

Preparedness Day 2023

Thank you to everyone that joined us for our Preparedness Day Event sponsored by Millersville’s CDRE, Center for Disaster Research and Education! This event is to promote the importance of being prepared for the inevitable bad days to come. At the event students were able to put together their own GO KIT which included:

• First Aid Kits Reusable Water Bottles
• Waterproof Phone Holders      
• Flashlights
• Whistles Emergency Contact Lists             
• Nonperishable Snacks                      
• Reusable Bags

For those who missed out on this year’s event, see some pictures below of what MU students got to experience. We had a variety of vendors giving small presentations and lots of information out to students about the importance of being prepared. Some of the vendors we had were:

• American Red Cross
• National Weather Service - State College
• MUPD        
• Civic Responsibility
• Lancaster SERT
• Keystone Wildfire                         
• PSECU        
• PA Turnpike

These vendors each gave small presentations at their table to students about what specifically they do and how students can start preparing themselves for bad weather, threats, lockdowns, and so forth. We had 17 vendors in total and about 150 students in attendance. We plan to have even more join us September 24^th, 2024, for next year’s event!

Congratulations to Dr. Timothy Sevison!

The CDRE is pleased to announce that Dr. Tim Sevison is now a permanent faculty member in the department of Earth Sciences at Millersville University! 

Dr. Sevison has an extensive background in emergency and disaster preparedness and response. He has been involved with emergency and disaster activities at the local, state and federal level for over 40 years, including response to numerous state and federally declared disasters. Dr. Sevison currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Emergency Management at Millersville University.
