We offer a Minor in Language Studies and a Minor in Culture Studies in Spanish or Japanese. These program are designed to help students acquire a high level of proficiency in a specific language and deep knowledge about the cultures related to the language. Students develop skills in linguistic, cultural, and literary analysis to be prepared for careers in a field where they can use their second language at a professional level.

This program is designed for students who have studied a language in high school and want to continue its study in college to develop as much proficiency and culture knowledge as possible within a minor. Required courses (18 credits in the language):
This minor can be completed in two years. Up to half of the required credits can be taken in a Study Abroad program. 9 credits must be completed in residence at Millersville University.
This program is designed for students who want to start studying a new language in college. Required courses (12-18 credits in the language, 0-6 credits taught in English, 18 credits total):

The Language and Culture Studies program is firmly based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. These are the learning outcomes that guide our instruction:
Speaking: Students demonstrate proficiency in oral communication by engaging in conversations with others and making presentations in the target language.
Writing: Students demonstrate proficiency in written communication in the target language.
Reading and Listening: Students demonstrate proficiency in comprehending and interpreting written and oral content in the target language.
Culture: Students demonstrate awareness of sociohistorical and political realities of diverse countries, regions, and ethnic groups and critical thinking in discussing these realities.
Intercultural Communication: Students compare and contrast significant developments and traditions in their home culture with the cultures where the target language is spoken.
