Exploratory Program History

For almost 40 years, Millersville Unversity's Exploratory Studies & Student Development Program has helped thousands of students who just aren't quite ready to decide on a major or program of study.

The Exploratory Studies & Student Development Department has become one of the most successful programs at Millersville University. From its inception in 1986 to present, the Exploratory Studies & Student Development Department focuses on helping undeclared/undecided students choose a major and graduate from Millersville University. We encourage students to graduate on time while giving them the opportunity to explore a variety of interests to match their passions and skills with a major. Entering college in Exploratory Studies & Student Development does not mean students will be here longer; it just means their path to graduation may be a little different, but just as fulfilliling!

Our purpose is to assist exploratory students in navigating the world of higher education and setting a course for the future. The department focuses on guiding exploratory students in their individual and unique journey. Students will be assigned an academic advisor who is trained to work with students on course selection, campus involvement, student services, and major/minor exploration through student directed assessments of strengths and interests. Our academic advisors take a holistic approach to advising, striving to know students individually and learn about their personal journey and specialized interests, aptitudes, and abilities. Exploratory advisors have a wealth of knowledge to help students with their transition at Millersville University and take interest in their students' experiences, achievements, and accomplishments on campus. In short, an academic advisor will not tell students what to do -- rather, an academic advisor will listen, make suggestions, and guide students along the way.

We also assist students who may start in a major and decide after some time that it is not the right fit. Any Millersville University student may change to Exploratory Studies until they decide on or meet the requirements to get into the major of their choice.
