International Studies in the Canadian Parliament
During the summer of 2005, Anne Wonsettler (INTL minor; GOVT major) spent five weeks as an intern with a member of the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. Anne (on the right) is pictured here with the MP that she worked for, The Honorable Paddy Torsney, who has represented a riding (district) in Ontario since 1993. During her internship, Anne was not only introduced to various domestic Canadian issues which were on the political agenda, but because MP Torsney is the Parliamentary Secretary for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Anne worked on numerous international issues such as Sudan and the Kyoto Protocol. While in Ottawa, Anne became very familiar with the parliamentary buildings, attended a number of ministerial "Question Times" in the House of Commons, met with the Speaker of the House of Commons and visited the US Embassy for presentations by American diplomats. In looking back on her time in Canada, Anne notes, "I consider my summer experience priceless to my education." Anne was one of 29 students from 14 universities across The United States who participated in this program in 2005. She is the second Millersville University student to participate in this program. INTL major Irene Tzinis participated during summer 2003.
