Music Certification
Millersville University's post-baccalaureate certification program provides graduate students with the knowledge and experiences to excel as a K-12 Music teacher.
Why Study This Program?
Meet the requirements for Pennsylvania educators through Millersville University's nationally accredited Music program. Originally established in 1855 as an institution for training qualified teachers, MU continues to offer top-notch, specialized teacher training programs.
This graduate-level course of study is designed for students with bachelor's degrees in Music who would like to teach in the state of Pennsylvania or to add another instructional area of certification to their present certificate. Upon completion of this post-baccalaureate certification program, graduates receive a Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate.
By applying to this graduate-level program, you can complete the courses you still need for certification as a teacher without completing another degree. Each application to this program is reviewed by a team of professionals in order to award you the most credit for past coursework and to determine what requirements still need to be fulfilled to meet state certification requirements.
Millersville University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the American Association of University Women.
What Will You Learn?
The post-baccalaureate certification program for Music features coursework and experiences intended to produce outstanding K-12 music teachers.
All students seeking their first instructional certificate must be admitted to Advanced Professional Studies (APS) at Millersville University. The University follows the APS requirements in order to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education mandates and be considered a state-approved teacher education program that successfully leads students to certification.
The course of study for graduate students progressing through the graduate-level Music program is unique to each student. Once the University reviews your transcripts, you will receive a list of courses that will provide you with the knowledge and experiences you need to excel as an educator. Most applicants need to complete foundational education courses, professional education courses and a semester of student teaching.
The certification programs at MU prepare students to pass the tests required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to receive an Instructional I certificate. In order to be certified as a Music teacher, you must pass the two-hour Music: Content Knowledge and Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge Praxis Tests administered by ETS.
