The English Department offers minors in the following areas

Note: with the exception of Film, Journalism, and ESL/Linguistics, these minors are not for English majors.

American Literature (Fall 2010)

18 credits minimum (beyond required composition courses) including ENGL 235, 236, 237, and three of the following : ENGL 331*, 421, 422, 423, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, 429, 482, HUMN 400*.
*When its primary focus is American Literature.


British Literature (Fall 2010)

18 credits minimum (beyond required composition courses) including ENGL 233, 234, 237, 405 and two of the following: ENGL 331*, 403, 404, 406, 407, 408, 411, 412, 413, 414, 415, HUMN 400*.
*When its primary focus is British Literature.


Creative WRiting and Publishing

18 credits minimum (beyond the required writing courses) including ENGL 274, 317, 471, ENGL 300 (internship with publishing focus) or ENGL 498 (creative thesis), and two classes selected from ART 331, COMM 327, ENGL 274 (repeated), ENGL 318, ENGL 466, ENGL 471 (repeated, building on earlier work), any 200+ writing-intensive ENGL literature course, DESN 244, or ENTR 201. 


Film Studies (Fall 2010)  UPDATED 2016

18 credits minimum including ENGL 240 (Intro to Film), ENGL 481
(History of Film), ENGL 347 (Ethnicity in Film) OR 482 (Film and American Society); ENGL
483 (Politics and Media); ENGL 281 (Media Literacy) OR 484 (Science Fiction, Technology and Film);
and one of the following: PHIL 327; ANTH 227; ART 201, 306, 342, or 376; COMM 337;
ITEC 110.
 
*Note: Students may also apply to count film courses taken at F&M towards their film minor.


General English (Fall 2010)

18 credits minimum (beyond the required composition course) including at least one course in each of the following areas: language/linguistics, literature, and writing. Selection of individual courses must be consistent with University-wide curricular policies for minors.


Linguistics (Fall 2010) updated in 2016-17

ESL/Linguistics minor: 18 credits. ENGL 220 and ENGL 221;
12 credits from among the following courses: 321, 322, 460, 462, 463, 464, 465.


Journalism (Spring 2016)

English Majors with Journalism Option: 18 credits minimum, (beyond any course used to meet requirements for the Print Journalism Option) including ENGL 250, 318, 327, 328, 330, 435, 473 and Cooperative Education in Journalism courses, ENGL 300 & 400.

Non-English Majors or English Majors without Journalism Option: 18 credits minimum including 12 credits from required courses and 6 credits from elective courses. Required courses: ENGL 313, 315, 473, and one of the following: ENGL 317, 318, 330. Elective courses: ENGL 250, 318, 327, 328, 330, 435 and Cooperative Education in Journalism courses, ENGL 300, 400.


Writing Studies (Fall 2010) updated

18 credits minimum, consisting of 1 Core course: ENGL 272; 4 Elective courses from ENGL 280, 311, 312, 313, 316, 318, 319, 340, 342, 471, 491, COMM 342, 403, 430, GERM 460, FREN 460, SPAN 460 (2 courses must be from within the English Department and at least one course must be at the 400 level); 1 Capstone course from ENGL 400 or ENGL 472. Prerequisite: ENGL 110.
