My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has been one of growth, strength and self-discovery. When I first came to Millersville, I struggled a lot with my mental health. Adjusting to college life was not easy, and there were times I felt lost and unsure of myself. Over time, I realized that the only way to grow was to push myself out of my comfort zone and get involved.
Joining a sorority was the first big step I took. Through Alpha Sigma Tau, I found a community that supported me and helped me build confidence. I learned what it means to be accountable, organized and dependable – skills that helped me grow both personally and professionally. Holding leadership roles within the sorority taught me how to communicate effectively, handle responsibilities and work with others in a professional and respectful way.
Becoming an Orientation Leader was another turning point in my journey. It helped me strengthen my leadership and teamwork skills while supporting new students as they adjusted to campus life. Later, joining the Orientation Planning Committee allowed me to take those skills even further. I learned how to manage events, collaborate with staff and stay professional in different situations.
Looking back, I’m proud of how much I’ve grown. My mental health journey has taught me resilience and empathy, while my involvement across campus has helped me build a strong sense of professionalism. Through each experience, I’ve learned how to carry myself with confidence, communicate clearly and lead by example – all of which have shaped me into the person I am today.

As a first-generation college graduate and queer, nonbinary student, my path to Millersville was anything but easy. Without the right accommodations in place to support my disabilities, I struggled to keep up and eventually had to step away from my first degree. When I decided to try again, I was face-to-face with a professor who was discriminatory, an experience that deeply shook my confidence and sense of belonging in higher education.
Coming to Millersville gave me a chance to start over in a community that truly values empathy, inclusion and understanding. For the first time, I felt seen, not just as a student but as a whole person. Professors listened, accommodations were accessible and I met peers who celebrated authenticity rather than conformity. That sense of belonging helped me rebuild my confidence and learn how to advocate for myself and others.
My time at Millersville has been a journey of healing and growth. I’ve learned how to turn past pain into purpose, learning to use my creativity and empathy to design for accessibility and inclusion. Earning my degree here isn’t just an academic achievement; it’s a personal victory that symbolizes resilience, self-advocacy and the importance of finding a community that lifts you up for exactly who you are.

B.S. Emergency Management | M.S. Emergency Management (Spring '26)
From the moment I first visited Millersville University, I knew it was a place of acceptance. It might have been the cozy atmosphere, the tight-knit community or the large pride flag that hung from the Student Memorial Center, but all of it felt like a new home. Once I began my first steps here, I knew my first impression was correct.
The friends I created here, the faculty I learned to love and the new whirlwind of responsibilities all pushed me to break the mold I had set for myself and flourish into a bullheaded, results-driven, self-love indulger who knows his worth and his potential. Millersville University gave me the resources and the foundation that taught me the boxes people place you in don’t define who you are; they’re fuel to realize your own potential. As I near the end of my EPPIIC journey with Millersville, I look back at the awestruck freshman and look within to my inner child. Both of them couldn’t be prouder of how I’ve embraced who I am, despite turmoil, and how I’ve surpassed my own expectations, despite unbridled doubt. I stand proud and thankful for Millersville University, for it was here that I learned to love, grow and be unapologetically myself.

B.A. Economics
When I first arrived at Millersville University as an international student majoring in economics, I was filled with both excitement and uncertainty. Everything was new – the language, the classroom culture and even the way people interacted. I worried about whether I could adapt, but over time, Millersville became a place where I not only learned but also grew into a more confident and independent person.
The value of Exploration has defined my experience. Studying economics allowed me to explore how global systems connect people and policies, while living in a different country pushed me to explore new perspectives, cultures and friendships. Every class discussion and group project helped me see the world through a broader lens. Professionalism and Integrity guided me throughout my studies. Balancing coursework, research and part-time work on campus taught me responsibility, discipline and the importance of honesty in both academics and life. Through these experiences, I learned that success is built not only on knowledge but also on character. The value of Inclusion has meant the most to me. Millersville’s welcoming community made me feel supported despite being far from home. Professors, classmates and mentors encouraged me to share my story and embrace who I am. Looking back, my EPPIIC journey represents resilience, growth and gratitude. Millersville has given me more than an education – it has taught me how to think critically, act compassionately and live with purpose. Wherever I go next, I will carry these values with pride as part of the Millersville family.

My journey at Millersville University has been a deeply personal and transformative experience. Being here has not only shaped the way I view leadership and innovation but also helped me navigate real-life challenges with resilience. The knowledge I’ve gained here is bigger than statistics and biology. I have learned proficiencies that can be applied to any situation in the real world. Communication, problem-solving and time management are only a few of the skills I’ve sharpened while attending this university.
Throughout my time at Millersville, I faced significant hardships, all while trying to stay committed to my education. These obstacles tested my limits, but the values I stand by showed me how to persevere, adapt and grow through adversity. At one point, I even took time away from school to reflect on my priorities, and I came back more focused than ever, determined to finish what I started.
A lot of my peers who came to college with me either dropped out after one semester or almost made it to the end but never got their degree. I allow those individuals to live through me as I use them as my biggest motivation. My journey hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been robust. And as I near graduation, I’m proud of my success but most importantly how far I’ve come no matter how long it took. While being a man of the Lord, I am never dismayed because he will always lend his righteous right hand when I need to be strengthened. Walking across that stage will be a symbol of not only academic success but of persistence, growth and the power of God.

My time at Millersville University has been defined by discovery, resilience and authenticity. As a first-generation college student and transgender man who grew up in an Old Order Mennonite community where education ended at eighth grade, pursuing higher learning once felt impossible. Choosing to leave that world was my first act of Exploration, a leap into uncertainty guided by curiosity and hope. At Millersville, I found not only opportunity but belonging. Through the University Honors College, mentorship programs and research, I learned that knowledge grows strongest when it includes every voice.
Being visible as a transgender student in science has taught me that Professionalism and Integrity mean leading with authenticity and compassion, even when doing so invites scrutiny. Sharing my story has become a quiet form of advocacy, reminding others that inclusion and courage go hand in hand. The Public Mission of Millersville, to serve others, has shaped how I approach every classroom, lab and community space: as opportunities to build understanding and create belonging.
The EPPIIC values have guided my transformation from a student who once doubted his place in higher education to someone who now mentors others navigating their own paths. Compassion, for myself and others, remains the foundation of that journey. Millersville has given me more than an education; it has given me the confidence to live fully and to carry forward a commitment to inclusion, integrity and empathy in every community I serve.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been an incredible experience that has shaped both my academic and personal growth in ways I could not have imagined. Coming from Nigeria, one of the biggest differences I noticed was how approachable and supportive my academic advisors and professors are. Back home, it can sometimes feel intimidating to reach out to lecturers or seek guidance, but here at Millersville, faculty members truly go out of their way to make sure every student feels seen and supported. Whether through office hours, quick check-ins after class or emails that show genuine care, their willingness to help has made a huge impact on my confidence and academic success.
The student-centered system at Millersville is also something that stands out to me. Every process, from getting admitted through the international programs and services office (IPS), to course advising, to campus engagement appears to be designed to help students discover their strengths and reach their full potential. The environment encourages curiosity, collaboration and growth, motivating me to take on new challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
I was also a beneficiary of the EPPIIC Compassion Fund from the Office of Student Affairs during a very difficult time in my life. The timely help and genuine concern I received reminded me that Millersville is more than just a university; it is a caring community. That act of compassion is something I will never forget.
In addition, working with the Center for Health Education and Promotion (CHEP) opened my eyes to how deeply Millersville values student wellness. I have witnessed firsthand how the University promotes mental health, well-being and belonging as part of its culture. My journey here has truly embodied the EPPIIC values – Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity and Compassion, and I am grateful to be part of a community that prioritizes student success and holistic growth.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been a deeply meaningful and empowering experience that has shaped me as both a student and a leader. Guided by the values of exploration, professionalism, public mission, inclusion, integrity and compassion, I’ve grown in confidence, leadership and purpose throughout my time at Millersville. As president of First Gems, an organization that supports first-generation college students, I’ve worked to foster inclusion and belonging for students who are often the first in their families to navigate higher education. Leading this group has taught me the importance of compassion, mentorship and advocacy.
Through programs, workshops and community events, I’ve helped create a space where students feel seen, supported and celebrated. In addition, serving as vice president and events chair of Mentoring Educators for Tomorrow has strengthened my professionalism and organizational skills. I’ve learned how to collaborate effectively, plan impactful events and lead with integrity. These experiences have allowed me to grow as an aspiring educator while building meaningful connections with peers and faculty who share my passion for teaching and community engagement. Together, these leadership roles have given me opportunities to live out Millersville’s public mission to learn, serve and lead with purpose. My EPPIIC journey has been one of discovery and development, shaping me into a compassionate and motivated leader who is committed to making a positive difference in education and beyond.

In spring 2022, I came all the way from Malaysia, full of excitement and nerves and ready to begin a new chapter at Millersville University. My time at MU has been one of the most rewarding and transformative seasons of my life. Coming from a different culture, I got to experience the full American college experience, something I had only imagined before. Navigating cultural differences, language barriers and adjusting to a new environment wasn’t easy. I had to learn, relearn and adapt constantly.
But through those challenges, I discovered resilience, community and growth. One of the highlights of my journey was being part of the tennis team. Competing as a Marauder taught me the power of teamwork, discipline and pride. Winning championships and reaching the NCAA regionals are memories I’ll carry with me forever. More than the victories, it was the feeling of fighting alongside my teammates and representing MU that made it meaningful. Millersville gave me more than an education; it gave me a space to grow, belong and lead with authenticity. As I prepare to graduate, I carry these experiences with me into the next chapter, proud of how far I’ve come and excited for what’s ahead.

B.A. Psychology | Criminology Minor
Although I will graduate from Millersville in a shorter amount of time than some, my time as an undergraduate meant just as much to me. Since my first semester, I have been a member of the University Choir and Cantilena Women’s Choir through the Tell School of Music. In my second semester, I added Psychology Club to my schedule. Every semester since, I have added at least one new commitment to Millersville in my schedule, and for those opportunities I will always be grateful.
I have worked as an Integrated Studies Support Coach for three semesters, a tutor at the Writing Center and a Millersville mentor for first-year students for two, and a tutor for the psychology department. Additionally, I was inducted into Millersville’s third Cygnus Society in the spring of 2024, which I have served in throughout my final semester. I am extremely proud to graduate from this university; not only will I create my own legacy, but I will carry on that of my family, as both of my parents, Timothy and Kristy Sparwasser, graduated from Millersville in 1995 and 1998, respectively. I plan to further my education at Millersville in the clinical psychology graduate program starting in the spring 2026 semester, and I look forward to continuing to learn and develop as an individual with the embrace of the community I have found on this campus.

My time at Millersville University has been filled with amazing experiences, learning and growth. Through exploration, I learned to step out of my comfort zone by joining the Psychology Club as a board member and CHAARG to get my body moving and make new friends.
My growth in professionalism has flourished with two internship experiences with Arch Street Center and Ponessa Behavioral Health. These internships have allowed me to strengthen my communication and teamwork skills in clinical and community settings, as well as taught me how to maintain boundaries and ethical practice. Furthermore, my coursework and projects helped me manage deadlines and practice organization.
Millersville’s public mission has encouraged me to be involved in my community by serving as a psychology department peer mentor to support first-year students in their adjustment to college and by volunteering.
I’ve had the pleasure of learning about many different backgrounds and cultures different from my own, and been able to experience the value and power of having compassion for those around me. I am kind in both personal and professional settings, which allows me to support others and connect with them.
As I prepare to graduate, I am reflecting on all the experiences I’ve had over the past three years and how they have shaped my character. I am forever grateful that I was able to further my education as a psychology major and social justice minor, and I will use my experiences from undergrad to help guide me as I transition into the next phase of my life.

B.S. Media Arts Production | Strategic Public Relations Minor
My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has honestly been a big part of who I’m becoming. When I first got here, I didn’t always feel confident or like I knew where I belonged. Little by little, I started finding spaces that helped me grow, especially in media arts production and through my involvement on campus.
Working on projects in the MU television studio helped me come out of my shell. Learning how to handle the equipment, being behind the camera and being part of something creative showed me that I’m capable of more than I thought. It pushed me to take myself more seriously and trust my own abilities.
One of the biggest parts of my journey has been becoming the vice president of First Gems. Being first-gen myself, I know what it feels like to navigate college without guidance, so helping create a space where students feel supported means a lot to me. Planning events, communicating with members and seeing people feel seen and welcomed made me realize how important community is. It also taught me responsibility, leadership and how to show up for others. Balancing school, early work shifts and leadership hasn’t been easy, but it made me stronger. The EPPIIC values, especially Integrity, Inclusion and Compassion, showed up in the way I treat others, how I communicate and how I carry myself.
Overall, Millersville has helped me grow into someone more confident, involved and ready for what comes next. This journey has become a part of me, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
