GREETINGS FROM FACULTY
Speech by Dr. Oliver Dreon
Graduates, families, faculty, administrators, trustees, and guests,
I’m Dr. Oliver Dreon, president of APSCUF, the faculty union at Millersville. On behalf of the faculty I’m honored to represent, congratulations. Today celebrates your dedication and persistence, and we are proud of you and grateful to have been part of your journey.
Your journey will continue after today’s celebration. Some of you will begin new careers in exciting new fields. Some of you will venture off and travel to new locations. Others will continue their education by enrolling in graduate school to pursue degrees in science, medicine, and law.
When I graduated some thirty years ago, I wish I could say that excitement and adventure were on my horizon.
Instead, I moved back home and returned to my high school job at Kmart. In my defense, I needed to save some money before starting graduate school in the fall. I also really loved that job at Kmart.
For those of you who might not be familiar, Kmart was the Target of its day. My coworkers and I joked that if you couldn’t find something at Kmart, you probably didn’t need it.
During my time at Kmart, I did a host of different jobs. I stocked shelves, ran the register, and mixed paint. But my favorite job was running blue light specials.
Blue light specials were a uniquely Kmart phenomenon. Throughout the day, the store would offer special discounts on products, and my job was to push around a podium with a beacon light on the top and announce the special to shoppers.
At specified times during the day, I’d turn on the blue light and get on the PA system and say:
“Attention Kmart shoppers, I’d like to call your attention to the flashing blue light at the front of the store…”
And people would run from all over the store to that flashing blue light. They knew that something special was happening.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but that job taught me something important. At most points in our lives, there won’t be a flashing blue light to let you know that something important is happening.
You won’t see one the night you meet your future spouse.
Or when your child takes their first steps.
Or when you have your last conversation with a close friend.
Life sadly doesn’t work that way. Most of the really important moments in our lives may not reveal themselves until years later. To live life to its fullest, you need to be present and pay attention.
But today is different.
There may not be a flashing blue light, but the pomp and circumstance make it clear: this moment matters.
We are here to celebrate you.
So be present today. Enjoy it. Soak it in. This is one of those moments.
And when you leave here—when the ceremony ends and life moves forward—remember this: pay attention, even when there’s no blue light.
In closing, I leave you with this:
Attention Millersville graduates… congratulations!

GREETINGS FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION & Senior Class Gift
Speech by Tevon Kerr-Hornbaker
Thank you, Dr. Gasparich
Hello Trustees, President Wubah, and most importantly graduates!
We did it!
Do you remember that first day? This finish line probably seemed years, even decades, away. But we met every challenge head-on, pushed through every obstacle and earned this moment. On behalf of the Student Government Association and entire student body, I want to congratulate you, because it was not an easy task.
One of the things that often gets lost in the rush of graduation is that for the past years, Millersville stopped being just a school we attended. It became a home. This campus holds the memories of every late-night, every study session, every Evergreen trip, and every small moment that you now hold dear. It’s the comfort of knowing your people were just down the hall – those friends you found by accident became the anchors of your life.
We didn’t just walk these paths; we grew on them and created them. Driving down George Street for the first time, I knew instantly that this was “it.” It felt like the small-town community I grew up in. And that is exactly what we built here: a community that will stay with us no matter where our next paths leads.
This Millersville community has shown us many important things, like being EPPIIC. It is one of the many foundation pillars of being a Millersville graduate. These six terms years are a blueprint for our future and have given us essential character traits and tools that ensure we don’t just succeed, but leave a lasting, and positive impact on the world.
Now before you walk across the stage today, take a second to connect with your younger self, the one who was still mapping out the future here as a Marauder. Can you see that version of you in the stands right now? They are beaming with excitement and joy as you complete this chapter and step into the next. And as you look in the stands find your family, friends, loved ones and give them a wave, I’ll give you a moment to find them.
And as I look out at you today, I am filled with immense gratitude. Serving as your SGA President for the last two years has been the highlight of my four years at Millersville. You didn’t just elect me; you’ve challenged me, inspired me, and taught me about what it means to lead with passion. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your friendship, your trust, and for allowing me to be your voice. You have shaped me into the person I am today, and you’ve made Millersville a home I will truly miss.
Now I want you to go out and make your lasting impact on the world, and I can’t want to see what that impact will be.
Thank you, and Congratulations Class of 2026!

Moment of Reflection
Speech by John McDonald ’26
If someone had told me 6 years ago that I’d be standing here today, with my master's degree completed, I probably would’ve smiled… and then checked D2L at 2:00 am in a panic to see what assignment I forgot to turn in.
Because what this degree represents isn’t just the coursework we learned about. It represents the early mornings, late nights, missed events, sacrifices, doubt, and above all else, choosing not to quit.
Faculty, staff, friends, families, and of course, my fellow 2026 graduates. My name is John McDonald, and 11 years ago, I walked across the stage on the football field here at Millersville and received my undergraduate degree in education. I have been teaching Technology Education and coaching high school baseball ever since. Back in the summer of 2020, I decided to take a leap and start my graduate program back here at Millersville to receive a Master's of Education in Sports Management. I am happy to say today, I’ve done just that.
I am speaking to you all today about my resilience and experiences throughout this Master’s program with everything going on in my life. And to be honest, it was no easy task, as you all know, with the long nights on D2L completing papers, projects, discussion posts, and reading the course textbooks. But on top of all that, teaching middle school woodworking, hoping that no one cuts their finger off… grading, coaching baseball, being a dog dad, and a husband. With all the support I had along the way, I am not only thankful for everyone who supported me, but I am extremely proud of myself for what I was able to accomplish.
The word PROUD sticks out to me the most because it is truly hard to sit back and say to yourself, “I am proud of what I’ve accomplished.”
So I want you all to look around for a moment… In this gym where we sit there are students who came straight from getting their bachelors degree, some who took time off from school and some who came straight from work.
Some of us finished in four years.
Some of us took longer.
Some of us started over.
Some of us almost quit. And yet, because of our hard work and grit, we all arrived at the same place with a diploma in our hands. Nobody can take that away from you. You should 100% be proud of yourself. If no one has said how proud they are of you for completing this degree today, I am proud of you. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2026.

Commencement Address
Speech by Mr. Jason Wicht ’98
Good evening faculty, families, friends—and most importantly, the graduating class of 2026 – congratulations to each and every one of you.
Having spent a fair amount of my life sitting at events just like this, I know what’s going through your head right now.
“How long is this speech actually going to take? I wonder where we are going to eat after this? Why is it called the ‘SMACK’ anyway when there isn’t an ‘A’ anywhere in the name. I hope everyone can see how cool the top of my cap looks right now. And finally, you’re clearly thinking…Who exactly is this person, and is he even qualified to be here?”
Well, I can help with the last question. I guarantee there are probably people more qualified to be here with you today—and honestly, I am as surprised as you are that I’ve been given this opportunity right now. But, if you allow me, I’d like to tell you why I believe that I am hopefully the right person, at the right moment, to be here speaking to all of you.
First, I have literally been where you are sitting right now. Not in some abstract, “I remember what it felt like” kind of way—but physically, right here on this campus at Millersville University… sitting in a chair just like the one you’re in now, about to graduate… looking ahead and trying to figure out what comes next. And I am proud to have my daughter, Elizabeth, sitting out there with you right now, ready to graduate as well.
Second, as a part of my journey, I started my almost 30-year career as an intern from right here at Millersville and have had the luck and opportunity to literally grow up while working my way through a competitive and changing business environment. During this process, I have been fortunate enough to recruit and hire hundreds of people for teams that I have had the privilege to lead. I have also worked side by side with incredibly successful business leaders at all levels and from all backgrounds. That gives me a unique, first-hand perspective on many of the key things I have seen help—or hinder—individuals as they build a career and a life beyond this place.
Listen, I am sure that among this large group, there are maybe one or two who are just innately amazing, without comparison. You’re already independently wealthy, have it all figured out, and don’t need any advice. If that is the case, awesome. I am super happy for you, and you don’t need to listen for the next few minutes. Feel free to go back to checking the follower counts for your radically successful hairless cat influencer channel or refreshing your startup bitcoin wallet.
However, for everyone else… it’s okay. I’m here to tell you that you are just like the rest of us—working at things day by day—and you may just have to settle for being absolutely extraordinary. And I am here to reassure you that you already have all the tools you need to truly become extraordinary.
The key is right there in the word extra-ordinary. Many of the attributes I have seen in successful team members—especially those who excel early in their careers—are anchored in doing simple things really, really well. No magic. No secret formula. Just a consistent commitment to fundamentals, and doing them slightly better than the next person, in a way that makes people want to work with you.
First principle: Just do the work.
I know it sounds oversimplified, but this matters at every level. Yes, there are smarter ways of working and tools to help you—and you should use them. But many people try to “outsmart” doing the work. In my experience, there is no shortcut. Prepare for the meeting. Be responsive. Deliver on commitments. Over-deliver when possible. It gets noticed. The only way to finish is to get started.
Second: More important than the will to win is the will to prepare to win.
This idea has been attributed to many people over the years, but it rules the day for me. Success in interviews, meetings, and presentations has much less to do with the moment itself and everything to do with preparation outside the room. Understand the context. Learn the subject. Make a plan. If you remain genuinely curious, preparation becomes much less daunting—and it is often where your most successful moments are born.
Third: Be a good human.
Yes, there are stories of tyrant leaders who drive results through fear. We have all seen those movies. But most of us want to work with people we trust—people who are engaging, collaborative, and genuinely kind. You can strive for excellence and still be a good human. And it is amazing what you can accomplish when you aren’t worried about who gets the credit.
Fourth: Be an active participant in your own rescue.
People are always willing to help—but they notice whether you are doing your part. Struggling is inevitable. Growth takes time. But showing initiative, effort, and accountability tells others their support is well placed.
Fifth: Don’t be afraid to lead.
One of the best leadership lessons I learned happened outside of work. On a family trip, I knew where we needed to go, but I hesitated to assume leadership. Finally, my wife took my arm and said, “Don’t worry—it’s okay to lead.” Often the biggest problem is not bad leadership, but no leadership at all. It will feel uncomfortable—but when someone takes the first step, it almost always benefits the group.
Sixth—and final: Take time to reflect on what you are working so hard for.
Your “why” will change over time. Understanding your motivation helps guide decisions and trade-offs. For me, it eventually became simple—working hard to make my family proud. Every once in a while, check in with yourself and make sure the choices you are making still align with your why.
With that, let me close by saying thank you. Thank you to all of you for allowing me to be here today. And thank you to Millersville—this special place that has given so much to me and my family.
I met the love of my life here, got engaged here, learned from incredible mentors here, began my career here, and now I get to celebrate your achievement—and my daughter’s—right here. That is something we will always treasure.
Thank you for the small things, too—the Sugar Bowl, Jack’s fries, and the two swans that somehow tolerate all of us. These are the things you will carry with you forever.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story. I know I speak on behalf of your families, friends, and faculty when I say how incredibly proud we are of you, and how excited we are to see how truly extraordinary you will become.
Elizabeth, I love you more than you’ll ever know. We are so proud of you. And congratulations to the entire class of 2026. Thank you.

The Alma Mater/National Anthem
The Alma Mater
Words: Esther E. Lenhardt, Class of 1910; Sanders P. McComsey, Class of 1917
Music arranged by: Melzer R. PorterMillersville, we sing to thee,
Hymns of praise and loyalty.
Stately trees and campus wide,
We recall with thoughts of pride.
Honor, fame and glory bright,
We inherit through thy might.Sons and daughters staunch and bold,
Following ’neath the Black and Gold.
Rippling lake and ivied walls,
Memories of thy classic halls.
Scholarship thy first great aim,
Proudly still uphold thy name. Here we fight for truth and right,
Shield and buckler ever bright.
Forth we march to bring thee fame,
Spirits light and hearts aflame.
Alma Mater, we adore,
Thy great spirit evermore.Rich in truth we’ll ever be,
Millersville, we sing to thee.
Hopeful, faithful, earnest, true,
Still thy standards to pursue.
Gratitude and reverence may
Millersville be thine for aye.The National Anthem
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? -
