GREETINGS FROM FACULTY
Speech by Dr. Oliver Dreon
Graduates, families, faculty, administrators, trustees, and guests,
I’m Dr. Oliver Dreon, president of APSCUF, the faculty union at Millersville. On behalf of the faculty I’m honored to represent, congratulations. Today celebrates your dedication and persistence, and we are proud of you and grateful to have been part of your journey.
Your journey will continue after today’s celebration. Some of you will begin new careers in exciting new fields. Some of you will venture off and travel to new locations. Others will continue their education by enrolling in graduate school to pursue degrees in science, medicine, and law.
When I graduated some thirty years ago, I wish I could say that excitement and adventure were on my horizon.
Instead, I moved back home and returned to my high school job at Kmart. In my defense, I needed to save some money before starting graduate school in the fall. I also really loved that job at Kmart.
For those of you who might not be familiar, Kmart was the Target of its day. My coworkers and I joked that if you couldn’t find something at Kmart, you probably didn’t need it.
During my time at Kmart, I did a host of different jobs. I stocked shelves, ran the register, and mixed paint. But my favorite job was running blue light specials.
Blue light specials were a uniquely Kmart phenomenon. Throughout the day, the store would offer special discounts on products, and my job was to push around a podium with a beacon light on the top and announce the special to shoppers.
At specified times during the day, I’d turn on the blue light and get on the PA system and say:
“Attention Kmart shoppers, I’d like to call your attention to the flashing blue light at the front of the store…”
And people would run from all over the store to that flashing blue light. They knew that something special was happening.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but that job taught me something important. At most points in our lives, there won’t be a flashing blue light to let you know that something important is happening.
You won’t see one the night you meet your future spouse.
Or when your child takes their first steps.
Or when you have your last conversation with a close friend.
Life sadly doesn’t work that way. Most of the really important moments in our lives may not reveal themselves until years later. To live life to its fullest, you need to be present and pay attention.
But today is different.
There may not be a flashing blue light, but the pomp and circumstance make it clear: this moment matters.
We are here to celebrate you.
So be present today. Enjoy it. Soak it in. This is one of those moments.
And when you leave here—when the ceremony ends and life moves forward—remember this: pay attention, even when there’s no blue light.
In closing, I leave you with this:
Attention Millersville graduates… congratulations!

GREETINGS FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION & Senior Class Gift
Speech by Tevon Kerr-Hornbaker
Thank you, Dr. Gasparich
Hello Trustees, President Wubah, and most importantly graduates!
We did it!
Do you remember that first day? This finish line probably seemed years, even decades, away. But we met every challenge head-on, pushed through every obstacle and earned this moment. On behalf of the Student Government Association and entire student body, I want to congratulate you, because it was not an easy task.
One of the things that often gets lost in the rush of graduation is that for the past years, Millersville stopped being just a school we attended. It became a home. This campus holds the memories of every late-night, every study session, every Evergreen trip, and every small moment that you now hold dear. It’s the comfort of knowing your people were just down the hall – those friends you found by accident became the anchors of your life.
We didn’t just walk these paths; we grew on them and created them. Driving down George Street for the first time, I knew instantly that this was “it.” It felt like the small-town community I grew up in. And that is exactly what we built here: a community that will stay with us no matter where our next paths leads.
This Millersville community has shown us many important things, like being EPPIIC. It is one of the many foundation pillars of being a Millersville graduate. These six terms years are a blueprint for our future and have given us essential character traits and tools that ensure we don’t just succeed, but leave a lasting, and positive impact on the world.
Now before you walk across the stage today, take a second to connect with your younger self, the one who was still mapping out the future here as a Marauder. Can you see that version of you in the stands right now? They are beaming with excitement and joy as you complete this chapter and step into the next. And as you look in the stands find your family, friends, loved ones and give them a wave, I’ll give you a moment to find them.
And as I look out at you today, I am filled with immense gratitude. Serving as your SGA President for the last two years has been the highlight of my four years at Millersville. You didn’t just elect me; you’ve challenged me, inspired me, and taught me about what it means to lead with passion. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your friendship, your trust, and for allowing me to be your voice. You have shaped me into the person I am today, and you’ve made Millersville a home I will truly miss.
Now I want you to go out and make your lasting impact on the world, and I can’t want to see what that impact will be.
Thank you, and Congratulations Class of 2026!

Moment of Reflection
Speech by Helga Mendez ’26
Good morning, graduates, families, Dr. Wubah, distinguished faculty, and friends.
Standing here today, it’s hard not to think about the journey that brought us to this moment. Not long ago, many of us began this path with excitement, curiosity, and maybe a little uncertainty about the road ahead. I sure did!
We started with goals and hopes for what we might accomplish.
Today is a meaningful moment not only for us, graduates, but for everyone who supported us along the way. We recognize those here, those who traveled from near and far, and those not with us but held in our hearts. To our family and loved ones, thank you for your encouragement, patience, and support. This accomplishment is yours as well.
Along the way, faculty members and mentors challenged us to think deeper and helped us see possibilities we might not have recognized on our own. Thank you for your support, your guidance, and for pushing us further than we thought we could ever go.
Today, we celebrate a significant milestone. Graduation represents years of hard work and growth. It wasn’t easy—there were late nights studying, assignments that felt overwhelming, and moments when we asked ourselves, “Why did I procrastinate?”
Yet, somehow, we made it— let’s not forget to thank caffeine, group chats, and a few last-minute miraculous study sessions that helped us along the way.
Today is about more than earning a diploma. It reflects the moments that shaped us—moments when we doubted ourselves, moments when others believed in us, and moments when we realized we were capable of more.
Education is about curiosity, asking thoughtful questions, and applying what we’ve learned in classrooms, internships, and from mentors…to empower others.
We’re graduating in unpredictable times that can feel overwhelming. Our communities face increasingly complex challenges. At the same time, we’re asked to do more with less, even before our coffee kicks in. But moments like these remind us why education matters.
As graduates, we carry both opportunity and responsibility—opportunity to pursue our passions and contribute to our communities, and responsibility to lead with compassion, integrity, and purpose.
Graduation isn’t the end—it’s a new beginning. The best leaders stay curious, open to new perspectives, and committed to growth.
Challenges will come. Plans will change. Obstacles may appear. During these moments, remember the perseverance that got you here. If we survived long nights of studying and group projects where one person mysteriously disappeared, we’re already more prepared than we realize.
If there’s one thing I’d encourage you to remember…
As my grandfather would tell me: “Estudie para que salga del montón.”
Educate yourself so that you may rise above…
Rise above by continuing to learn.
Rise above by continuing to question.
Rise above to make our communities stronger.Today, we will rise above with dignity and hope as we enter a world that needs thoughtful leaders, compassionate voices—people willing to make a difference.
And TODAY, that opportunity and responsibility belong to us, the Class of 2026.

Commencement Address
Speech by Rev. Dr. Dexter L. Davis Sr.
Good morning, President Wubah, board of trustees, university administration, distinguished faculty, proud families, cherished friends, and above all, the graduating class of 2026 of the College of Education and Human Services at Millersville University.
Thank you for welcoming me back to the place that shaped my life so profoundly, nearly half a century ago.
As I stand before you today, I am filled with immense pride, gratitude, and a profound sense of nostalgia.
Forty-nine years ago, I sat in a seat much like yours, heart pounding with excitement, hope, and just a touch of nervous anticipation.
I am honored to return as a proud alumnus, a member of the Millersville family forever, sharing in your joy and dreams on this remarkable day.
To the faculty and staff who have guided you, supported you, and inspired you—thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence and care.
To the parents and loved ones, your sacrifices, encouragement, and love have paved the way for these graduates, and you too deserve our applause.
To the graduates—today is your day, a milestone you have earned through determination, resilience, and unwavering effort.
Give yourself a round of applause.
I remember the mixture of emotions that filled me on my own graduation day: joy, relief, uncertainty, and the anticipation of new adventures.
Just like you, I wondered about the future—what would become of my dreams, what challenges awaited, and how I would measure up to the world beyond Millersville’s campus.
We share this excitement, this hope, this longing to make a difference in the world, using what we have learned here to serve, to teach, and to lead.
Today, I want to talk about growth, courage, and the richly woven fabric of experiences that define a Millersville Marauder.
My journey to this campus began as a first-generation college student, coming from an urban majority environment where the city’s rhythm was all I knew.
Arriving in the tranquil, rural embrace of Millersville State College, I found myself suddenly in the minority, surrounded by rolling fields and a pace of life that felt utterly foreign to me.
On my way to campus riding by Amish families being transported by horse and buggy.
I will never forget my first autumn here—the crisp air laced with the unmistakable scent of fertilizer, a fragrance I could not escape, no matter where I walked.
It was, to say the least, a striking reminder that I was no longer in the city, and I wondered—sometimes with a laugh, sometimes with longing—whether I would ever get used to it.
As a newcomer, I often felt out of place, missing the familiar pulse of home, the comfort of my community, and the faces that looked like mine.
I remember being the only person of color on the freshmen football team.
The same situation played out in many of my freshmen classes.
But it was here, in this new place, that I discovered resilience within myself—an ability to adapt, to reach out, to find common ground with people whose skin color and backgrounds were different from my own.
I quickly learned that Millersville was more than a campus; it was a community that welcomed me, challenged me, and encouraged me to grow.
I found friendship and belonging in the most unexpected places—sometimes in the classroom, sometimes at a late-night study session, and sometimes at the legendary “sweat box parties” at the SMAC.
Those nights, filled with music, laughter, and the joyful release of dancing after a week of exams, are etched into my memory, a testament to the bonds we built here.
And who could forget the bush parties behind former Burrowes Hall?
There, under the stars, we learned as much about each other as we did in any seminar—sharing stories, hopes, and the occasional beverage.
We were thankful for the white field chalk that allowed us to find our way to and from those epic parties.
I am going to invoke the Vegas rule. What happened at the bush parties stays at the bush parties
Millersville was the setting for countless adventures—small moments that became cherished memories over time.
But above all, the Ganser/McNairy Library holds a special place in my heart, not just as a sanctuary of knowledge, but as the place where I met the love of my life.
I can still picture that quiet corner of the library where we shared our first conversation, during that time we were both pledging our beloved fraternity and sorority.
That meeting led to our first date, more study sessions, and eventually, a lifelong partnership that began right here at the Ville.
Fifty years later we are still going strong.
I am going to make sure that Micki and I stop pass the McNairy Library to take a picture before leaving campus.
These memories are more than nostalgia; they are the foundation of who I am today, and I hope they remind you that the connections you made here will shape your life in ways you cannot yet imagine.
Millersville taught me more than academic knowledge; it taught me empathy, perseverance, and the importance of community.
It showed me how to turn challenges into opportunities and differences into strengths.
It helped me find my voice, my purpose, and the courage to pursue a career in education—even when I doubted myself.
As a first-generation student, I often felt the weight of expectations, the fear of failure, and the pressure to succeed not just for myself, but for my entire family.
I know many of you share that experience, and I want you to know—your journey matters, your struggles are valid, and your dreams are worth pursuing.
Education is a powerful force for change, and you have been equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to transform lives in your communities and beyond.
Remember, the lessons learned here at Millersville go beyond the classroom; they are the guideposts that will help you navigate life’s uncertainties.
When I graduated in 1977, the world was a very different place.
We listened to music on cassette tapes, wrote letters by hand, and made phone calls from pay phones in the hallways of the dorms.
We faced challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time—economic uncertainty, social change, and a world grappling with new technology and shifting values.
But we also believed in possibility, in progress, and in the hope that our actions could make a difference.
Today, you graduate into a world transformed by technology, diversity, and global interconnectedness.
You are more connected, more informed, and more empowered than any generation before you.
But you also face new complexities—challenges that require courage, creativity, and unwavering resolve.
The world needs your leadership, your compassion, and your boldness now more than ever.
You will shape the future of education, advocate for justice, and be the champions of change in every community you touch.

The Alma Mater/National Anthem
The Alma Mater
Words: Esther E. Lenhardt, Class of 1910; Sanders P. McComsey, Class of 1917
Music arranged by: Melzer R. PorterMillersville, we sing to thee,
Hymns of praise and loyalty.
Stately trees and campus wide,
We recall with thoughts of pride.
Honor, fame and glory bright,
We inherit through thy might.Sons and daughters staunch and bold,
Following ’neath the Black and Gold.
Rippling lake and ivied walls,
Memories of thy classic halls.
Scholarship thy first great aim,
Proudly still uphold thy name. Here we fight for truth and right,
Shield and buckler ever bright.
Forth we march to bring thee fame,
Spirits light and hearts aflame.
Alma Mater, we adore,
Thy great spirit evermore.Rich in truth we’ll ever be,
Millersville, we sing to thee.
Hopeful, faithful, earnest, true,
Still thy standards to pursue.
Gratitude and reverence may
Millersville be thine for aye.The National Anthem
O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? -
