About the Exhibition ...

Reclaiming Our Narrative: History, Identity, and Liberation is a collection of works consisting of various media, allowing the viewers to gain a perspective of the Black American experience in different aspects. Scott relies on historical context and narrative storytelling to bring forth and challenge socioeconomic and other issues related to race and classism. She specifically works with the figure, bringing the human/individual back into the narrative she is telling. The body of work she has developed at Millersville tends to be more serious and cynical, containing undertones of empowerment and liberation. The figures within her work are more stylistic and referential to Oceanic and African cultures, as well as the “urban” styles Black people have created throughout the last two centuries. These choices elevate black people in a way that society never has, therefore challenging where her people belong in the narrative and canon of Fine Art. In the current socioeconomic climate, it’s important to have the voices of black people being loud and heard to be understood through the use of art. This brings issues and culture into the viewers’ space, therefore challenging preconceived narratives that are held within our culture at large.
