Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management


As disasters become more frequent, complex, and costly, the need for skilled emergency management professionals continues to grow. Our Emergency Management degree, offered both in-person and fully online, prepares you to lead before, during, and after emergencies by combining scientific knowledge, practical skills, and real-world problem-solving.  Students gain hands-on experience through tabletop exercises, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, and other activities that build the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to real-world situations.  All students are also required to complete an internship or conduct research in teh field, providing valuable professional experience and opportunities to apply classroom learning to current emergency management challenges.

Through this engaging multidisciplinary program, you will learn how to:

  • Apply emergency management theory to real-world challenges.
  • Understand natural hazards from a scientific perspective and evaluate their impacts at the local, regional, national, and global levels.
  • Analyze data and use technology to support emergency planning, response, and recovery efforts.
  • Develop effective decision-making and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Assess community and organizational risk, resilience, and vulnerability to hazards and disasters.

Graduates are prepared for rewarding careers in a rapidly growing field with opportunities across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, emergency management careers offer competitive salaries, with emergency management directors earning a median annual wage of approximately $86,000.Career paths may include positions with:

  • Local, state, and federal government agencies
  • Emergency management departments
  • Public health organizations
  • Transportation and public works agencies
  • Nonprofit disaster relief organizations
  • Domestic and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)

On April 8, 2025, Chris Steppat, a student in Millersville University's Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management/Master of Science in Emergency Management program, received the New Jersey Emergency Preparedness Association Memorial Scholarship award at the NJEPA Conference Awards Dinner during the 26th Annual NJEPA Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
