Name: Elisabel BalbuenaElisabel in the lab.

Hometown: Lancaster, PA

Anticipated graduation: May 2023

Major: Chemistry

Internships/Research/Projects:

  • Independent research with Dr. Steven M. Kennedy (Spring 2022-Spring 2023):

Synthesizing 3,4-dihydro-2(H)quinolinones en route to derivatives of the naturally occurring antibiotic, Hunanamycin A.
  • Stony Brook University – Chemistry REU for Summer 2022.

Inspirations (for major, research, internship):

My inspiration to major in chemistry began in high school chemistry class. I had to teach myself a lot of difficult concepts and I found myself getting completely absorbed which led to me to developing a passion for chemistry. I recognize how important chemistry is to not only our understanding of the world but ourselves too. I love helping others and that’s why I especially love the research that I am conducting with Dr. Kennedy. I feel inspired by it because it all stems from wanting to find different alternative to treatments for bacterial infections and aiding in HIV and cancer treatments. The improvement in well-being for our local/ global communities is what I’m really interested and in for.

Highlights (from courses/internship/research):

Doing organic chemistry research with Dr. Kennedy has been a highlight for my academic career. He has been so helpful with guiding me in the laboratory and setting me up for my future career. Another highlight is getting accepted into Stony Brook University’s chemistry REU program. I feel very fortunate to have been chosen for this opportunity as it will enrich my chemistry knowledge and laboratory skills.

Takeaway (from courses/internship/research):

My biggest takeaway from being a chemistry major is to never lose sight of the future but remain focused on the present. I think there has been a lot of trying times, especially during the COVID pandemic, that made me lose sight of what I’ve been working so hard for. However, it took going through those moments to realize how great the “small” steps are because they are what’s leading you to where you envision for your future.

Advice (for incoming freshman in your shoes):

My advice is to always ask questions. Professors love engagement inside and outside of the classroom, so take advantage of their office hours when you can and ask questions in class. Developing a relationship with your professors is essential to your academic and professional growth.

Aspirations (upon graduation):

After I graduate from Millersville University, I plan to take a year or two to work on research and development at a pharmaceutical company then move onto graduate school for a Ph.D.

What has been the most significant and/or exciting aspect of your work?

As a first-generation American and college student, every opportunity that I have gotten to experience has been more than I could have ever imagined myself doing. From the instruments I have used, the success of my research, and acceptance of an REU; they have all been exciting aspects of being here at Millersville
