PIAA Coaching Requirements - Coaching Education (letter of Completion)

Why take the required courses at Millersville?

Graduate Level:

  • Students can earn graduate credits (3 credit courses) while completing PIAA requirements
  • All Graduate‐Level courses will satisfy ACT 48 requirements
  • Courses do count as electives in the Department’s M.Ed. in Sports Management program
  • Courses are fully online and can be accessed from anywhere
  • Courses also count towards the Letter of Completion in Coaching Education


Undergraduate Level:

  • If completed WSSD 480 (or 551) and WSSD 311 starting with Fall 2014 semester, students will graduate and be in full compliance of PIAA requirement 
  • All courses count towards Athletic Coaching Minor, which will provide additional breadth and depth for future coaches

Courses to Satisfy PIAA Coaching Requirements


PIAAIn April of 2014 a new requirement that states all Coaches within the PIAA Member School system must complete several courses in order to remain or become a coach in the PIAA.

Listed below are the 4 courses that are required by the PIAA along with the Undergraduate‐ and Graduate‐Level courses offered by the Department of Wellness and Sport Sciences that will satisfy those requirements.

         1. Concussion Training Course requirement
                Undergraduate – WSSD 480 Theory and Techniques of Coaching and Sport
                Graduate – WSSD 551 Coaching of Sport or WSSD 618 Athletic Injury Prev. & Mgmt.

         2. Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training Course requirement
                Undergraduate – WSSD 311 First Aid and CPR
                Graduate – WSSD 618 Athletic Injury Prevention and Management

         3. Coaching Education Course requirement
                Undergraduate – WSSD 480 Theory and Techniques of Coaching and Sport
                Graduate – WSSD 551 Coaching of Sport

         4. First Aid Course requirement
                Undergraduate – WSSD 311 First Aid and CPR
                Graduate – WSSD 618 Athletic Injury Prevention and Management
