Required Clearances Overview and Information

Millersville University requires security clearances to be on file with the Department of Field Services by the advertised deadline dates to participate in field experiences.

Clearances - A Brief Overview

  • WHAT IS ... a 'Complete Clearance Packet' ? 

    'Complete Clearance Packet' consists of the following 4 Security Clearance documents:

    • ACT 34 - PA Criminal Background Check (ONLY 'Employment' status accepted!)
    • ACT 114 - FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Federal Criminal History Background Check)
    • ACT 151 - PA Child Abuse Clearance ('Volunteer' status NOT accepted!)
    • Negative TB Test (valid for 1 year)* or Chest X-Ray (valid for 2 years)
      • *Note - an additional, more recent TB Test may be necessary at the time of your field experience based on the educational partner's requirements.

    • Documents must meet the requirements on the Clearance webpage to be accepted.
    • Some issuing agencies charge a fee for these documents.

    Regarding the NSOR:  The National Sex Offender Registry Verification Letter (NSOR) may be required for some field experiences. 

    • The NSOR may be submitted separately and AFTER your 'Complete Clearance Packet'.
    • Do not wait for your NSOR results to submit your 'Complete Clearance Packet'.

  • Why is the clearance document 'Date of Issue' important?

    The 'Date of Issue' is the date the document was generated by the issuing agency.

    • Security Clearances are considered valid for one year from the 'Date of Issue' on the document.
    • Security Clearance documents must be valid (do not expire) for the entire semester during which there is a field experience. 
    • Current document submission deadline dates and document date requirements are posted in the 'Clearance Deadlines' tables on the Clearance webpage.

  • Is there a deadline to submit my documents by?

    Yes!  All clearance documents must be submitted by the clearance deadline date and meet specific date requirements for the semester in which you are taking a course with a field experience.

  • I'm an Online Bachelor of Science or Social Work program student. What clearance documents do I need?

    SPECIAL NOTICE:

    Students enrolled in the following programs, should contact the appropriate department for clearance information. 

    • Online Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education (Online Degree Completion Program) contact Online Programs.
    • Online Bachelor of Science in Special Education (Online Degree Completion Program) contact Online Programs.
    • Social Work students contact the School of Social Work.
