Master's in Language And Literacy (Plus Certification)

About M.Ed. Language and Literacy

The Department of Early, Middle and Elementary Education offers a master’s in language and literacy education in which students choose one of two concentrations: a literacy concentration leading to reading specialist certification, or an ESL concentration leading to ESL certification. Both concentrations are available for elementary and secondary teachers who possess an Instructional Certificate in Pennsylvania. A Master of Education in Language and Literacy Education offers the student the opportunity to participate in original research and experiential programs in this field.

These programs are available in a blended format.  Fully online options are available for eligible students.

M.Ed. Reading Specialist Concentration

Admission

Admission to the program is open to those applicants who possess baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university. Applicants must submit supporting documents as required for general admission to a graduate program. Applicants must possess Pennsylvania Instructional I Certification. Applicants must have earned a 2.75 or better undergraduate cumulative average. The General Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is required if undergraduate GPA is less than 3.0.

PROGRAM SPECIALIST - READING SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION

Millersville University is an approved provider of a Reading Specialist Certification (click here for curriculum sheet). Persons who have a valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or Instructional II certificate and have enrolled in and completed the Millersville University Reading Specialist courses are eligible to receive reading specialist certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

LITERACY COACHING ENDORSEMENT (must have a Reading Specialist Certification)

The fundamental goal of the Literacy Coaching Endorsement is to prepare teachers who will be effective in helping improve the knowledge, skills, and practices of teachers, thus enhancing student achievement. A literacy coach is one who helps teachers to recognize what they know and can do, assists teachers as they strengthen their ability to make more effective use of what they know and do and supports teachers as they learn more and do more. The Instructional Coaching Endorsement is available for reading specialists who desire to strengthen their professional knowledge, build skills in instructional coaching and stand out in the field. This is an endorsement to be added to an existing reading specialist certification.

CERTIFICATION PROGRAM IN SUPERVISION OF READING & LANGUAGE ARTS

To qualify for admission the Reading Supervisor Certification program, a candidates must have:

  1. A master's degree from an accredited college (or be pursuing one concurrently);
  2. Reading specialist certification; and,
  3. Five years of satisfactory teaching experience with primary responsibility for reading/language arts.
