Chemistry Placement Test
Chemistry Placement Test
CHEMISTRY TESTING PROCESs
- You MUST have a testing date/time reserved with the Chemistry Department. Please complete the Reservation Form to reserve a suitable test time with open space. An email confirmation will be sent to you with further instructions.
- Incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to take the Chemistry Placement Test at New Student Orientation over the Summer. You do not need to make a reservation to take the test at orientation. Please only complete the reservation form if you are unable to attend orientation.
- You will need a pencil and blank paper.
- CALCULATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE USED DURING THE TEST.
- You may use this Periodic Table for the test: Download pdf or Open Webpage
- Login to the Teams page at your scheduled test time using the link provided to you in your registration confirmation email.
- The test is 25 multiple choice questions, and you will have 30 minutes to work on it. Each page has 5 questions, and you will not be able to return to questions once you move forward.
- The test covers fundamentals of chemistry, like atomic and molecular identity or structure, simple math relationships and conversions, scientific notation, and reaction relationships. It is not necessary to study in advance. The goal is to place you into the course that would best build on your present understanding of chemical principles so that you will be successful in your study of chemistry.
CHEMISTRY PLACEMENTS
- Your Chemistry Placement Test score will determine if you are prepared to begin your chemistry study in CHEM 111 or if you should complete CHEM 110 first to be adequately prepared.
- Students must still meet math requirements for enrolling in either chemistry course.
- Students scoring 12 (48%) or higher are placed into CHEM 111 (Math met by ONE of the following)
- Math placement into MATH 160 or higher
- Completion of MATH 101 with a C- or higher
- Students scoring 11 (44%) or lower are placed into CHEM 110 (Math met by ONE of the following)
- Math placement into MATH 160 or higher
- Enrolled simultaneously with MATH 101
- Completion of MATH 101
- Students placed into CHEM 110 must earn a C- or higher to enroll in CHEM 111.
WHO NEEDS TO TAKE THE CHEMISTRY PLACEMENT TEST?
- Majors in Allied Health, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Middle-Level Education (Science/Math), Automation in Robotics & Engineering, OR a PREMED in another major will need to take at least CHEM 111.
- You must take the Chemistry Placement Test and have the score on record with the Chemistry Department to be able to register for your first CHEM course. We recommend making arrangements well before the early registration period each semester. Incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to take the Chemistry Placement Test at New Student Orientation over the Summer. Please only complete the reservation form if you are unable to attend orientation.
- Students who received AP/IB credit for CHEM 111 or who have received college transfer credit for a university approved equivalent CHEM 111 course can enroll in chemistry courses without taking the CPT.
