Kirstin Myers

Thank you for your interest in the double reed program at Millersville University!  Our double reed studio is continually growing and we would love to have you audition to be a part of our successful music program!  Large ensemble performance opportunities for double reed players at Millersville include orchestra, wind ensemble, and concert band.  There are also opportunities for small ensembles such as quintets, quartets, trios if you are interested in pursuing them.  Lessons take place on a weekly basis and focus on varieties of scales, etudes, repertoire, and reed making.  Reed making is not a pre-requisite for admission, but once you are attending Millersville you will soon learn to not only make reeds, but to do so independently.  

Audition requirements for double reeds should include selected works demonstrating your level of musical and technical mastery. At least two works {etudes, solos, or movements from larger works} of contrasting styles are expected. Major scales and arpeggios are required to demonstrate range and technical command. Oboist Kirstin Myers, a member of the Millersville music faculty since the fall of 2000, earned her B.S. in Music Education and Oboe Performance at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a minor in Piano. In 1999 she also earned her M.M. in Oboe Performance, summa cum laude, as a full scholarship recipient from Michigan State University. In addition to her Millersville appointment, Mrs. Myers has been the Oboe Professor at York College of Pennsylvania since the fall of 1999. Mrs. Myers has been a featured soloist with the Johnstown Symphony, the IUP Symphony, the Reading Pops Orchestra, the New Holland Band and the Lyric Band of Hanover. She has also been a soloist for The Wheatland Chorale, the Susquehanna Chorale, and has performed with the Lancaster Opera Company. While in Michigan she served on the faculty of Alma College and performed with such groups as the Greater Lansing Symphony Orchestra, West Shore Symphony, Jackson Symphony, and the Midland Symphony. Her primary teachers include Daniel Stolper, William McMullen, Robert Lloyd, Robin Driscoll, and Kim Webster. Mrs. Myers also studied bassoon with Barrick Stees while attending Michigan State University.

In addition to her collegiate appointments and solo engagements, Mrs. Myers maintains a private studio and works as a freelance musician. She is currently a member of the York Symphony Orchestra, the Reading Pops Orchestra, the Keystone Winds, Trio Jolie, and The Silverwood Trio. She was also the principal oboist of the New Holland Band for 16 years. Mrs. Myers is a member of the International Double Reed Society and AFM Local 294.
