Department Honors & Awards
The faculty of the Department of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology take great pride in students who excel both inside and outside the classroom. Each academic year, we recognize outstanding achievement through a variety of scholarships and awards. These honors span the full range of our programs, celebrating students in Engineering Technology, Applied Engineering & Technology Management, Occupational Safety & Environmental Health, Technology & Engineering Education, and Graduate Studies.

Philadelphia Alumni Award
Awarded to a Technology Education major who demonstrates the best qualities of a technology teacher as recommended by the AEST faculty.
Established in 1947; last awarded in 2023.
Burl N. Osburn Award
Awarded to a student who excels in Technology & Engineering Education.
Established in 1964.
Paul W. Eshleman Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to an AEST student for excellence in woodworking. Scholarship is paid upon the student’s enrollment for the second semester of the senior year.
Established in 1978.
J. Richard Steinmetz Technology Teaching Award
Awarded to a senior technology education senior who in the judgment of faculty has high potential to become a successful teacher, as evidenced by outstanding performance in student teaching and excellence in professional and technical areas.
Established in 1980.
Henry J. Kauffman Award in Metal Technology
Awarded to a senior AEST student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has attained distinguished achievement in metal technology.
Established in 1981.
American Society of Safety Professionals Raymond C. Mullin Award
Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Occupational Safety & Environmental Health. Recipients must have completed a minimum of 15 hours of OSEH courses and 12 hours of department-related courses with a GPA 3.0 in OSEH courses and 2.5 overall.
Established in 1986.
William McGrorty ’82 Excellence in Printing Technology Award
Awarded to an AEST major who has completed 90 credits, possesses a GPA of at least 3.0, consistently produces high quality work, displays innovative ideas, and demonstrates outstanding commitment to the printing profession.
Established in 1986.
International Society of Automation - Central Keystone Section Outstanding Student Award
Awarded to a junior or senior Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology student who possesses a GPA of at least 3.0 and is committed to or specialized in demonstrating outstanding performance in Transportation/Energy/Power.
Established in 1989.
American Industrial Hygiene Association Scholarship
Awarded to one or more students majoring in Occupational Safety and Environmental Health or a related discipline and has shown a proclivity towards industrial hygiene. The recipient must have a 2.5 GPA, completed 60 credits, 12 in industrial hygiene.
Established in 1992.
Donald Maley Spirit of Excellence Outstanding Student Citation
The International Technology and Engineering Education Association recognizes excellence in scholarship and leadership potential Technology Education. This is awarded at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Graduate citation established 1996; undergraduate citation established 2016.
Steinman Foundation/Intellegencer Printing Upperclassmen Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time junior or senior Applied Engineering and Technology Management - Graphics Communication or Technology Education major with a demonstrated performance in graphic communication and a 3.0 GPA in the major.
Established in 2001.
Susquehanna Litho Club Underclassman Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time freshman or sophomore admitted into either the Associate or Baccalaureate degree programs in Applied Engineering and Technology Management or Technology Education with a demonstrated interest in graphic communication.
Established in 2001.
Dalton E. Smart Humanitarian Scholarship
Awarded to student making a significant contribution to the education of classmates through positive interactions, thought-provoking questioning, and insight into the impact of technologies on humans. The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate AEST student, with a junior or senior rank, and a minimum of 2.5 overall GPA.
Established in 2002.
C-P Flexible Packaging Gary Nicholas Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time rising senior in the Occupational Safety & Environmental Health program, who matriculated from York County. The recipient must have a GPA of 3.2 or greater in the program, with consideration given to overall GPA.
Established in 2003.
Dr. Joseph J. Abromaitis Family Scholar-Athlete Scholarship
Awarded to an AEST student who participates in a varsity sport program and expects to continue in the year the scholarship is awarded. The recipient must be full-time, maintain a 3.0 GPA in AEST courses, and be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
Established in 2004.
Robert H. and Virginia K. Brown Scholarship
Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in Technology Education of Applied Engineering and Technology Management. The scholarship may be renewed for four additional semesters providing the student maintains a 3.2 GPA.
Established in 2006.
Dr. Dale H. Messerschmidt Technology Education Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time sophomore with the highest GPA at the end of the first semester of their sophomore year in the Technology & Engineering Education Program.
Established in 2007.
Susquehanna Engineering & Manufacturing Gravell Scholarship
Awarded to a freshman enrolled in an AEST program, in either the Associate or Bachelor degree program, with a strong commitment to the major.
Established in 2008.
Richard S. Levandusky ’58 Technology Education Scholarship
Awarded to a first year student majoring in Technology Education. First preference is given to a student from Eastern Lebanon County High School, secondly from Pennsylvania, otherwise at the discretion of the AEST faculty.
Established in 2008.
Richard Brenner ’41 Industrial Technology Scholarship
Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in the AEST department, with first preference going to a student receiving teacher preparation. The recipient will have a CGPA ranging from 2.5 to 3.25 and satisfy financial criteria.
Established in 2013.
American Society of Safety Professionals Lehigh Valley Chapter Award
Awarded to a rising junior or senior majoring in Occupational Safety & Environmental Health with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated financial need.
Established in 2014.
Paul G. Specht Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Scholarship
Awarded to an OSEH major who has a 3.0 GPA within the major and at least a 2.5 GPA overall and who has demonstrated initiative and leadership skills or who has a unique background or experience that distinguishes the student within the discipline.
Established in 2016.
Brent D. Frey Technology Education Scholarship
Awarded to one or more sophomore, junior, senior, graduate students majoring in technology & engineering education with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
Established in 2020.
Robert Clark Hosler Scholarship in Industry & Technology
Awarded to a full-time student on the basis of scholarship and academic achievement, renewable for up to eight semesters.
Established in 2020.
Harry A. ’65 & Caroyln Lohss Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
Awarded annually to a full-time student pursuing a major in MFET, Applied Engineering, or Technology Management. Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0.
Established in 2020.
Gene Haas Foundation EDU Scholarship
Awarded to students pursuing careers in manufacturing. Foundation funding goes directly to those training programs to attract prospective student.
Established in 2023.
Karl E. Gettle, PhD Scholarship
Awarded annually to an AEST major with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to a first-generation student. Financial need may be considered.
Established in 2024.
Wujcik Design Award
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate AEST student who creates a product or pedagogy with primary emphasis on of design. A product is defined as a 3D object at any scale. A pedagogy is defined as a teaching initiative developing a curriculum, class, lesson plan, or activity which educates students in the study of design.
