ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) / LINGUISTICS AT MILLERSVILLE

WHY STUDY ESL/LINGUISTICS?

Through a minor or option in ESL/Linguistics, you will

  • discover an exciting direction and marketable skill set for work in education, teaching ESL, translation, and more;
  • gain insight into the fundamental aspects of human language and communication;
  • develop an understanding of language structure, learn culturally responsive, effective ESL teaching methods, and study major branches of linguistics including historical, theoretical, and applied linguistics in this program;
  • explore how language functions in the real world and how language choices reflect and create contexts, and thus develop an awareness of the social implications of language use.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

ESL/Linguistics students experience the breadth of the English field while dedicating themselves to the specific study of ESL and/or Linguistics. ESL/Linguistics courses at Millersville University include Introduction to Language Study, Introduction to Linguistic Analysis, Modern Syntax, Applied Linguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language, Teaching ESL Listening and Speaking, and History of the English Language.
