Spanish Placement and Assessment
Language Placement (Available AUGUST-MAY)
All students seeking to take an initial Spanish class other than at the Elementary I level (101) will need to complete the language placement registration. Students who would like to take an Intermediate language class (201/202) or higher as well as all incoming students with a Language and Culture Studies major or minor will then take an online language placement test.
Oral Proficiency Assessments
The World Languages program assesses all majors' oral proficiency both at the midpoint and at the end of their studies. All majors will take the short version of the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview at the end of their sophomore year. Students with the Language Studies or Culture Studies option will take the long version of the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview in their senior year. Students with the Teacher Education option will take the official Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test. We expect all of our seniors to be at the Advanced Proficiency level.
ACTFL Proficiency
The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has established clear descriptions of what individuals can do with language in terms of speaking and writing in real-world situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context. The major levels Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced are subdivided into High, Mid, and Low sublevels.
