Undergraduate Programs

This program is designed for students who have studied a language in high school and want to become experts in the same language and culture. Required courses in the language (36 credits):

• Intermediate Language 201 and 202
• Composition and Oral Expression 351 and 352
• At least one literature course
• At least one civilization course
• Five electives at the 300- or 400-level
• One capstone course taught in the chosen language at the 400-level (linguistics, literature, or translation)

In addition, students will develop some proficiency in one or two additional languages (six courses total, 18 credits).

The following required courses also count towards the general education program (6 credits):

• Introduction to Language Study (English)
• A history, geography, or anthropology course related to the language studied

Study abroad in a full immersion program for one or two semesters during the junior year is highly recommended.

Four Year Pathways

• Language Studies - Spanish (PDF)

This program is designed for students who may start the program without previous experience in the language. Required courses (27-33 credits in the language, 3-9 credits taught in English, 36 credits total):

• Elementary Language 101 and 102
• Intermediate Language 201 and 202
• Composition and Oral Expression 351 or 352
• At least one literature course
• At least one civilization course
• Two electives at the 300- or 400-level of the chosen language
• Two additional electives, either at the 300- or 400-level or Humanities courses on the culture of the chosen language taught in English
• LANC 490, a capstone course for students from all languages with the Culture Studies option, taught in English

In addition, students will choose a minor (or second major) in another field. The Culture Studies option can be combined with any minor (or second major) on campus.

Study abroad in a full or partial immersion program during the junior year is highly recommended.

Four Year Pathways

• Culture Studies - Spanish (PDF)

This program is designed for students who want to become teachers of French or Spanish. In order to earn K-12 certification in Pennsylvania, they will need to reach a high level or oral and written proficiency in the language and be knowledgeable about culture. Required courses in the language (36 credits):

• Intermediate Language 201 and 202
• Composition and Oral Expression 351 and 352
• At least one literature course
• At least one civilization course
• Five electives at the 300- or 400-level
• A linguistics course at the 400-level taught in the certification language

In addition, students will develop some proficiency in one additional languages (three courses total, 9 credits).

The following required courses also count towards the general education program (6 credits):

• Introduction to Language Study (English)
• A history, geography, or anthropology course related to the language studied

Study abroad in a full immersion program for one or two semesters during the junior year is highly recommended.

Additional requirements in the teacher education program include 30 credits of education courses, 24 of those credits will be taken during the senior year when students are interning in a secondary school setting for two semesters as part of the Professional Development School program.

Four Year Pathways

• Teacher Education - Spanish (PDF)

This program is designed for students who have studied a language in high school and want to continue its study in college to develop as much proficiency and culture knowledge as possible within a minor. Required courses (18 credits in the language):

• Intermediate Language 201 and 202
• Composition and Oral Expression 351 or 352
• Three electives at the 300-level

This minor can be completed in two years. Up to half of the required credits can be taken in a Study Abroad program. 9 credits must be completed in residence at Millersville University.

This program is designed for students who want to start studying a new language in college. Required courses (12-18 credits in the language, 0-6 credits taught in English, 18 credits total):

• Elementary Language 101 and 102
• Intermediate Language 201 and 202
• Two electives at the 300-level in the Language, and/or up to two 300-level courses in Humanities, History, Latino Studies, Geography about the related culture

This minor can be completed in two to three years. Up to half of the required credits can be taken in a Study Abroad program. 9 credits must be completed in residence at Millersville University.

The Language and Culture Studies program is firmly based on the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. These are the learning outcomes that guide our instruction:

Speaking: Students demonstrate proficiency in oral communication by engaging in conversations with others and making presentations in the target language.

Writing: Students demonstrate proficiency in written communication in the target language.

Reading and Listening: Students demonstrate proficiency in comprehending and interpreting written and oral content in the target language.

Culture: Students demonstrate awareness of sociohistorical and political realities of diverse countries, regions, and ethnic groups and critical thinking in discussing these realities.

Intercultural Communication: Students compare and contrast significant developments and traditions in their home culture with the cultures where the target language is spoken.
