School Social Work Certification

Post Masters Certification

The curriculum in this certification program is designed to prepare social work students with the required knowledge, skills and expertise to support the academic, career and personal-social development needs of diverse of school aged children/youth and their families. Successful completion of MSW plus required certification curriculum includes onsite, in-person field practicum experiences in a Pennsylvania public school entity, including K-12 public school districts, charter schools, or intermediate units (IUs) that prepare candidates to be certified as a School Social Worker Educational Specialist.

Upon completion of the required coursework, the Certification Office at Millersville University will assist eligible candidates with the application process and provide recommendations for School Social Worker Educational Specialist Certificate PK-12.

Flexible Program Options

Applicants can earn their School Social Work certification while enrolled in the MSW program, part-time or full-time. Those applicants who have earned a master’s degree in social work from an accredited Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) program or an equivalent foreign qualification recognized by the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation (OSWA) may apply.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Apply various social work treatment modalities and evidence-based practices consistent with to effectively support the academic, social, and emotional well-being of school aged children and their families in school settings.
  2. Apply the social work helping process framework aligning with the expectations of the educational setting, program demands, time limits, and professional skills.
  3. Consult and collaborate with interdisciplinary team to effectively address the needs of children and families.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the CSWE nine core competencies by implementing SSW related services through coursework, field experiences and the practicum.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and expertise in the four domains of professional practice for school social workers.
